Bohemian vintage ring with purple glass and faux pearls

 A vintage ring from Bohemia

If you follow my blog, I love brooches but very occasionally I come across rings in the car boot and table top sales I attend that catch my eye. This pretty vintage ring originated in Bohemia. Aged about 1930s. It is in brass that was originally gold plated but has worn on the adjustable band. It has a square glass faceted stone with a surround of faux white pearl beads. Very tiny beads that have been strung onto thread and glued to the outside. Some loss to their pearl coating now, but not bad for about 90 years old. Brilliant glue though to last this long!. The purple stone is held in place by prongs and the wire band is slightly miss - shaped from the last person who wore it. Brought from a car boot sale and now in my own collection.

The ring is unsigned as with most vintage rings I have found in the past. If only vintage jewellery could talk. I wonder what tales they would tell. The Second World War who wore it then. Who brought this ring and where did it live and travel? It ended up in a Chelford, Knutsford, England car boot sale before I brought it. Not cleaned as yet, but now nestled in my own Bohemian jewellery collection.

Vintage and newer jewellery makes great gifts and if you wrap each either in a gift bag or box it makes a good gift look a little bit special.  Vintage means that the brooches, earrings, rings, necklaces, cufflinks, bracelets, etc all produced between the 1920s and 1990s. So that's up to 70 years of fabulous jewels to choose from. It makes them unique and often of better quality than some of todays jewellery. But don't take our word for it just have a look.

Vintage silver ring that has been formed out of a child's christening bracelet of silver.

Sarah Coventry brooch - this one is from the 1960s. Most  Sarah Coventry jewellery is true vintage now and they produced so many different and quality items to choose from.

 Original 1940s vintage jewellery set of a floral brooch and clip earrings. We just love finding sets as they match and just makes it easier when you come to put on your jewellery.

Celluloid cameo brooch - many cameos are available in so many different looks. A cameo never seems to go out of fashion and can make an outfit look so elegant and feminine.

More antique and vintage brooches. The top all gold coloured one is antique. It has an Etruscan look and quite lightweight. I re-painted it in gold and added the blue detail to make it usable again. The lower vintage brooch is from the 1920s - 1930s. A large clear rhinestone of glass set into an ornate surrounding frame. The circles may have contained rhinestone but they are all now missing. 

A very unusual Asian inspired necklace from the 1970s. It has a circular clasp to the chain and is in an all silver metal. 

 

I used to sell vintage jewellery but now I just collect. I look for the unusual and things that are a bit different - as well as jewellery that can be identified.

Dating Vintage Jewellery - Ring Band

Just a quick blog today. Dating vintage costume jewellery is something that can be quite easy or can be complex. This is an easy way to date a piece to within a 30 year period. I am a member of many jewellery discussion boards and would recommend joining. This information I discovered from the Yahoo group "The Jewelry Ring".

This ring band I had never seen before. The rest of the ring looked to date from around the 1930s, but I was not sure. The band is very distinct.

 

  

The band is flattened wire bent to fit a finger but with a wide opening and soldered to the underside of the main body of the ring. The ring actually dates to between 1900 and the 1920s.

Halloween or Samhain & What to wear

Next week on the 31st October is the celebration of Halloween or Samhain.
Many religious traditions surrounds this ancient holiday

Vintage modern Kitsch necklace

For the Celts it meant the end of the harvest and the start of the dark winter days. Bonfires were lit and it was a time for celebration.

On October 31st the night is sacred to the departed spirits; and this one night allows spirits to wander freely, also fairies and other little people are about. But you have to remember that the devil and evil spirits are also free to roam the earth. The trick or treat custom is meant to placate these spirits. The wearing of costumes is to blend in with the spirits so as not to be harassed by them.

Vintage ebony ring

In the Christian tradition, it is the feast of All Hallows Eve and November 1st is All Saint's Day, with November 2nd as All Soul's day.

Flowers that are popular during this time is the marigold, celosia, amaranth, carnations and gladioli and were used in the feasts.

Magical flowers and plants are acacia (victory over death), apple (desire), calendula (proof against demons), chervil (communication with departed spirits), Elder (cursing and blessing), fox glove (fairy folk), Heal-All (bewitchment protection, juniper (proof against witches), nettle (banishment), rue (witches), violet (mortal love), willow (sorrow) and yew (death)

Apples and pumpkins are plentiful this time of the year and were ideal to use in the feasts. Pumpkin being dual purpose and doubling as lanterns.
